Things to see in Mallorca

Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa is situated in a beautiful sheltered cove in the south west of Majorca and has been a major holiday destination for the past 40 years. Popular with the British, Santa Ponsa lacks the high rises of the resorts on the east coast, but the area is still very built up, with villas littering the surrounding hilly countryside, and more developments on the way.

The beach is the main draw here - a wide & long beach of silky soft white sand with beautiful blue seas. But there is more to Santa ponsa - a deep water harbour, Port Adriano is being built just up the road and will accommodate the super yachts of the rich and famous.

History of Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa may look like just another beach resort but it does has a permanent place in Mallorcan history. It was here that Jaume I landed in 1229 to begin his conquest of Mallorca, a conquest he described as 'the best thing man has done for a hundred years past'. A relief on a large cross above the marina, erected in 1929, records the event. A big festival at the end of August, beginning of September celebrates this landing, the annual festival of the Rei en Jaume.

Hotels in Santa Ponsa

There are no end of hotel and apartment complexes in Santa Ponsa. Many holiday makers come here on a package holiday and you can choose from all-inclusive right the way through to self-catering. The coast is lined with apartment blocks, so you should be able to ensure a sea view!

The only five star option in the area is the Port Adriano Golf & Spa Resort. Also, have a look at our pages on Accommodation to find your ideal holiday hotel.

Alternatively, look a little bit further afield into the countryside of Calvia, just to the north of Santa Ponsa, to find some lovely fincas (rural retreats) that offer more characterful accommodation. Son Boronat is a 200 year old farmhouse in a wonderful setting with five rooms.

Things to Do in Santa Ponsa

The beach is likely to keep you occupied for a good deal of your time. A swimming area is roped off to ensure you don't mix with the boats! There are sunbeds and parasols to rent, and on the water you can try pedaloes or jet ski. SCUBA diving is also available. The beach is backed by a promenade which has a selection of bars, cafes & souvenir shops.

Shopping is fairly limited to supermarkets and gift shops, but you will find local ceramics for sale plus all things nautical. There is no market in Santa Ponsa, the closest big market is held in Andratx to the west every Wednesday, and you can get a bus directly there or take a taxi if you don't have your own car.

With two marinas close by, sailing and boat trips are popular in Santa Ponsa - check the tourist office for details. Golf enthusiasts are spoiled for choice, with several golf courses in the vicinity and one being directly in Sant Ponsa itself. Tennis is also popular and there are tennis courts at the Santa Ponsa Tennis Club by the sports centre.

Horse riding is available at the Santa Ponsa Riding Club - it has excellent facilities and caters for adults & children of all standards.

Whilst there are no theme parks in Santa Ponsa itself, neighbouring Magaluf offers all sorts of water parks and family attractions.
